What you need that is not in the box

A lighter, or a long match.
A heatproof dish. A ceramic saucer, a small bowl or a shell. Not paper, not plastic.
A window you can open. Smoke alarms react to this, so open it first.

Birthday Ritual Kit

In the box: one stone tower, polished and pointed, matched to your birthday. One white sage bundle, dried grey green leaves tied into a bundle about the size of a cigar. One palo santo stick, a plain piece of pale wood about the size of a thick pencil.

Use one at a time. White Sage is for clearing, a stronger and smokier burn. Palo santo is lighter and sweeter, used for blessings and beginnings.

Open the window. Put the dish where you can reach it.
Hold the flame to one end of the sage bundle or the palo santo stick. Sage catches in about 20 to 30 seconds. Palo santo takes longer and needs the flame held on it steadily. Wait for it.
When the end glows orange, blow the flame out. It should smoke, not burn with a flame. That is the point. If it flares back up, blow it out again.
Hold it over the dish, or set it in the dish with the lit end up off the base.
Say the year out loud. What actually happened in it.
Put the tower where you will see it in the morning. A nightstand, a windowsill, a shelf you pass.
Press the lit end into the dish until it stops smoking completely.

Threshold Blessing Kit

In the box: one rose quartz tower, pale pink, polished, pointed, stands on its own. Rose quartz stands for welcome. One raw black tourmaline, black, rough, not polished, no point. Black tourmaline stands for protection. One white sage bundle. One palo santo stick.

Use one at a time. White Sage is for clearing, a stronger and smokier burn. Palo santo is lighter and sweeter, used for blessings and beginnings.

Open a window in the rooms you are going to cleanse (walk through).
Hold the flame to one end of the sage bundle or the palo santo stick. Sage catches in about 20 to 30 seconds. Palo santo takes longer and needs the flame held on it steadily. Wait for it.

Hold it over the dish as you walk, so nothing drops on the floor.
Walk every room, slowly. Doorways, corners, closets if you want.
In each room, say what you want in this house and what you want kept out. Out loud. One sentence each is enough.
Back where you started, press the lit end into the dish until it stops smoking completely.
Put the rose quartz and the black tourmaline somewhere they will be seen. A windowsill, a mantel, an entry table. Not a drawer, not a cupboard.

Clearing Kit

In the box: two white sage bundles and three palo santo sticks. No stone. This is the refill.

Open the window. Put the dish where you can reach it.
Hold the flame to one end. Sage catches in about 20 to 30 seconds. Palo santo takes longer and needs the flame held on it steadily.
When the end glows orange, blow the flame out. It should smoke, not burn with a flame.
Walk the room slowly with the dish under it, or sit still with it.
Say out loud what is ending.
Press the lit end into the dish until it stops smoking completely.

It does not clear anything by itself. It marks the moment, and you do the rest.

Good to know

Never leave it burning unattended. Not in another room, not for a minute.
Palo santo goes out on its own often. Relight it, or take it as finished. It is not faulty.
Both relight. A sage bundle lasts for several uses.
Press it out in the dish. Do not run it under water, it ruins the bundle.
In a rental, or a building with shared air, open the windows and keep it to one stick. The smoke carries into hallways.

The stone

Rinse the smoke over it when a season changes, or leave it out overnight under a full moon. As much a reset for you as for the stone.

When the sage runs out

The tower stays on the shelf for years. The sage and the palo santo are meant to burn down. The refill is two white sage bundles and three palo santo sticks, boxed the same way this was, $28.
